If anything, WIFIGAWD is prolific. From his recent output with New York’s Tony Seltzer to his early work on SoundCloud, the rapper swaps out rhyme styles like he does his latest vintage Ralph Lauren finds. Born and raised in Washington DC on reggae and classic New York hip-hop, WIFIGAWD cut his teeth early on Soundcloud, cranking out underground rap records with legends of the scene like Black Kray on “Scope”. WIFIGAWD’s early efforts revealed a trench-beat technician (Drake’s “I’m Upset” could learn a few things from “Check”), with revved up flows over production from frequent collaborators Oogiemane and Forza of Working On Dying. The last couple years have seen WIFIGAWD expand his sound, toying with new cadences and a diverse range of production. He often locks in with a single producer for a project, like the Heat Check series with Tony Seltzer or Hot As Hell with GAWD.
In the words of Dean Van Nguyen of Pitchfork, “WifiGawd uses digital portals to manifest in different regions, tripping through time and space like a rap game after Bill & Ted. He funnels familiar elements from all of rap’s historically powerhouse regions into his own psychedelic world. In this way, WifiGawd represents a vision of post-region rap that never really happened. In an era of algorithmic gatekeepers, he feels like a maverick. To the uninitiated, the scope of WifiGawd’s body of work might seem daunting. He’s been recording prolifically since the mid-2010s, building a phenomenal collection of hectic tapes that rumble and surge like they were forged during hypnotic all-nighters in the studio.
As the late and deeply mourned Lucas Foster said in The Fader: “WifiGawd is entirely self-possessed. His work has a singular focus: finding the most interesting and innovative young producers working, teaming up, and creating cohesive full-length projects that push the sound of rap forward. Wifi approaches this task with the same reverent and solemn sincerity that may mark a Buddhist monk, a violinist in a symphony, a Shakespearean actor. He’s is an integral part of both D.C.’s DIY scene and a larger DMV rap wave that promises to continue making a splash nationally. Beyond the appeal of his music, he has a magnetic charisma, elegant swag that is uniquely his own.” Let Wifigawd get you hip.
